After establishing a name for herself as a Canadian actress, YouTube personality, vlogger, comedian, and author at the early age of twenty-two, Lilly Singh, also known by the name Superwoman, has become one of the most prominent women in the industry as well as a very successful entrepreneur. Her unique background as a child of Punjabi parents growing up in the United States has allowed her to create her platform to combine her personal stories and good sense of humor with her astounding marketing skills. In 2017, she was ranked number one Highest-Earning Female YouTuber by Forbes Magazine, and her first book, “How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life,” was ranked number one on The New York Times Bestsellers list.
Her YouTube career started in 2010, and since then, she quickly rose to fame, reaching over fourteen million subscribers and 2.7 billion views to this day. She owns a merchandise series which is available on her website featuring her catchphrases. While it is common for YouTubers to create their merch and develop a marketing website, Singh has gone above and beyond to establish her brand. She first launched her red lipstick in partnership with Smashbox called “Bawse.” In the same year, she released a documentary called “A Trip to Unicorn Island” based on her 2015 world tour. Following her lipstick collaboration and tour, she continued to use the theme of a woman boss/leader (Bawse), releasing her debut book “How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life” two years later.
In 2016, Lilly Singh also launched the #GirlLove challenge, where she aimed to tackle girl-on-girl hate. She promoted her campaign by involving celebrities such as Michelle Obama, Bebe Rexha, Zendaya, and Sabrina Carpenter in interviews about ways to diminish hatred between females. She has also been announced as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to advocate for children’s rights. After her trip to Kenya in 2016, she made it her priority to help send girls from Kenya to school. Since then, she has continuously been using her YouTube platform to stress the importance of women empowerment in all fields. With the help of her YouTube channel, she has also developed other social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, where she used her success story as an inspiration for other young females.
In March 2019, NBC announced that Lilly Singh would star in her own late-night talk show called “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” to replace “Last Call with Carson Daly” starting in September 2019. Since NBC is a television network that mostly features white male talk show hosts, Singh definitely shook up the landscape with her feminist personality. While she has been experimenting with her platform on the late-night talk show, like any other first-timer to late-night, she still stuck with her brand in the end. Most of the guests on her show are successful women. While she might be addressing some more serious topics on her new platform, she still brings in her comedic side and continues to promote girl love in the same way that she used to on her own channel, where she still posts her regular skits.
I first found out about Lilly through her YouTube channel, when she still went by the name Superwoman, a little over five years ago. At the time, she was on tour and still managed to post weekly videos with her regular content. As a girl who was not living in the United States at the time, I definitely learned a lot from her, whether that be through her fun skits or stories from a brown person’s point of view. From a young age, she has shown me how a woman can become successful on her own while also empowering other women around her. Her numerous collaborations with successful women are essential for young females to see because they taught me an important lesson: women should never be pitted against each other, but rather help build each other up in a world where almost everything is more difficult to achieve as a female.
By becoming the first female ever to place in the top ten highest-earning YouTubers, she has inspired so many young females. I hope that all of the projects that she has done to uplift women, like the GirlLove challenge and a Rafiki For A Girl’s Education Campaign, will motivate other influencers to do the same and inspire young entrepreneurs who might be doubting their abilities.
